Overview
Many global water utilities still grapple with the basics of big data management such as establishing proper data governance, proving the ROI, and building cyber resilience. The new, SWAN Adaptive Data Management Group is designed to meet utilities where they are along their digital transformation journey, across various maturity levels and roles (e.g. operators, IT, CIO’s).
Open to all SWAN Members, the group builds upon the previous work of our Data-as-a-Service (DaaS) Community and Interoperable Utility Group (IUG). The main goal is to turn data concepts into real outcomes by bringing people and processes together, showing how this improves utility maturity and decision-making.
Objectives
- To expand utility data management capabilities based on evolving organisational needs and strategic opportunities.
- To understand relevant regional challenges and industry trends.
- To highlight success stories, lessons from failures and other sectors.
- To create useful resources (e.g. white papers, templates, fun memes, “top 10” lists).
Structure
The Group will host 8-10 collective global calls per year, including 2-3 open partner webinars, and be divided into the following three streams:
- Data Literacy & Standardisation: Empowering utilities to build core data skills, shared capabilities, and interoperable systems for smarter decision-making.
For example: How can teams learn to work with imperfect data and benefit from open data practices?
– Led by Kate Myers, President & CPO (Connected Things) & Anant Sriram, Environmental Engineer (CDM Smith)
- Cybersecurity & Business Continuity: Strengthening organisational capacity to safeguard and sustain resilient operations.
For example: What are the best strategies to train and empower teams to address cyber threats with the rise of AI?
– Led by Jason MacDonald, Manager, Cyber Security Governance, Risk, and Compliance (Halifax Water) & Brandon Erndt, Controls and OT Cybersecurity Technical Director (HDR)
- Innovative Business Models: Exploring new approaches and models to procurement, collaboration, and service delivery that reduce risks and drive value.
For example: How can procurement teams best collaborate with innovation departments/managers to streamline technology adoption?
– Led by Nitin Joshi, Environmental And Operations Technology Manager (City of Salem, OR)
Access
Once someone joins the Adaptive Data Management Group, they will receive all the stream call invites and recaps. Members will also have access to all past call materials and resources.
