Autonomous Water Quality Monitoring for Bodies of Water in Mexico

Restoring Mexico’s Lake Ecosystem with 24/7 Autonomous Water Quality Monitoring

Data-as-a-Service

This lake ecosystem in Mexico is a strategic contributor to a major city’s water security and local communities’ resilience. It’s also a significant water source for an important agricultural area.

THE CHALLENGE

The lake itself is a cause for public health concern – either by directly causing water and food-borne diseases or acting as a reservoir for antibiotic-resistant determinants. With the long-term introduction of various contaminants, the normal conditions of the lake, such as pH, nitrogen, phosphorus, and chlorophyll levels, are out of balance and can no longer support the species that live here. Currently, the lake is considered eutrophic due to an overabundance of plant life dying and decomposing into the lake’s water.

THE SOLUTION

KETOS has been able to implement a number of solutions on-site including:

  • Automated water sample test results generated from the KETOS systems set up as sampling stations around any lake, pond, or river are compiled as analytics accessible through the KETOS platform.
  • Data collected from KETOS SHIELD Sensor System is automatically aggregated and processed in a data
    warehouse.
  • Operators have access to current/historical data via these sensor systems for remote water monitoring capabilities (while receiving intelligence around the possible trends around risk they need to be mindful of).

The solution offers remote bidirectional connectivity, data warehousing, predictive maintenance, early warning/threshold-based alerts, ongoing real-time reporting, and actionable analytics, all set up for remote access 24/7, elevating the visibility and predictive nature of lake maintenance but, most importantly, leveraging technology. Through this project, local and state authorities will be provided with comprehensive water quality monitoring results, which will then be used to treat the lake and restore its health to preserve this national treasure for the country. Maintaining the critical health of the water also allows for enhanced safe water access for agriculture thus helping the farmers around the lake towards food safety and responsible runoffs.

The ultimate goal is to restore the lake ecosystem to its previous levels of abundance. To meet that goal, this project could be scaled beyond this initial three-year plan by increasing the number of KETOS SHIELD sampling stations to provide additional data on other areas of the lake.

RESULTS

KETOS SHIELD exists to eliminate the reactive nature of understanding water quality to help organisations and surrounding community stakeholders understand water composition and quality for optimal treatment and restoration without the intense manual labor needed for this task.

With more data and increased understanding, City Leaders can benefit from KETOS insights to educate the communities on the ongoing restoration of the lake for safer eco-tourism and reducing the pollution in the lake. Participating organisations will use KETOS data to plan for effective and sustainable remediations so it helps not only restore the lake to a stable state but also allow for proactive, ongoing maintenance.

Project Snapshot

Environmental Impact

  •  Maintaining water quality via actionable insights that can inform the impact of surface and agricultural runoff.
  • Educating farmers and the community on how to use less chemicals.

Public Health Impact

  • Improvements in water quality support lake biodiversity.
  • Marked impacts on the lives and livelihoods of farmers who depend on the lake’s water supply.
  • Proactive intelligence to protect those who use the lake for drinking water or other household activities.
