Energy Efficiency

Salfeet Municipality, a small town at the heart of Palestine, manages water supply for a population of over 15,000 people. The town grapples with ongoing water supply management challenges, exacerbated by water stress, high operational costs, and limited access to water resources. The team at water department invested huge efforts into improving operational efficiency and reduce losses, but was struggling with manual operations and an overwhelming workload.

THE CHALLENGE

Salfeet’s challenges included:

  • Water Scarcity: Located in the MENA region, Palestine suffers from high water stress and depends on groundwater as the only source of water to serve the ever-growing demand.
  • Aging infrastructure: The old water network added an extra burden on the Municipality, trying to improve feasibility but faced with frequent bursts and high leak rates.
  • Conventional management approach: Manual operations and legacy tech solutions did not help in overcoming operational challenges. The municipality was highly dependent on human intervention and field inspection to operate its pumping facilities and search for leaks.
  • Technical & financial capacity: Budget and resource limitations prevented the Municipality from actively tackling those issues.

THE SOLUTION

Salfeet Municipality implemented the Flowless system to tackle water losses and improve operations. Flowless interventions guided the Municipality through a smooth tech adoption journey, starting from network assessment and data transmitter deployment, and provided the Flowless web platform for insights on leak detection and process optimisation.

In Salfeet, water network operators use Flowless app daily to track operations, detect emerging issues, and control water pumps for efficient water supply management. They get a holistic analysis of the network to help in prioritising your work & put your efforts into tackling the low-hanging fruit, leading to fast improvements and short pay-back periods.

It starts with minimum night flow analysis and the standard water balance. It guides the network operator through a journey to identify potential leak recovery, all the way to scenario analysis & intervention planning.

RESULTS

The project benefits included:

  • Leak detection & losses reduction: Salfeet was able to save more than 10 million liters of water on a monthly basis through active leak detection, utilising insights from Flowless’ analytics platform to detect leaks as soon as they emerge.
  • Energy conservation: 37,944 kW energy savings by optimising operations of pumps in water networks. This significant reduction not only lowers operational costs, but also contributes to a greener environment by decreasing overall energy consumption.
  • Carbon emissions reduction: 16.4 tons of CO2 emissions cut by enhancing operational efficiency and streamlining processes in water facilities.
  • Financial savings: Resource conservation & operational efficiency translate into huge financial savings, providing a pay-back period of less than one year.

Flowless technology helps us to detect water losses in the network and improve water supply efficiency.
