AI/Machine Learning
– Dave Moore, Smart Systems Manager, WatercareWe’re getting real insight into how our network behaves in the field, not just in models. It’s helping us respond faster, target our investment, and give our teams the clarity they need to act.
Watercare is New Zealand’s largest water utility, serving 1.7 million people across Auckland. With ageing infrastructure, Watercare required a scalable, high-resolution monitoring solution across a large, complex wastewater network.
THE CHALLENGE
- Limited visibility into real-time network behaviour
- Rising environmental scrutiny and regulatory pressure
- Ageing infrastructure and unknown I&I locations
- Need to shift from reactive responses to proactive responses in the network maintenance space
THE SOLUTION
Watercare adopted a Data-as-a-Service model, deploying 5,000 Kallipr Spectra radar sensors paired with machine-learning analytics. The sensors capture level data every 15 minutes and adjust sampling rates based on anomalies. This architecture reduced cloud reliance, enabled proactive decision-making, and allowed Watercare to scale without internal platform builds.
RESULTS
- Enables real-time I&I detection and targeted rehabilitation
- Reduces false alerts and cloud costs via edge processing
- Delivers actionable insights to planners, operators, and asset managers
- Lays groundwork for semi-autonomous control and smart capital investment
