Remote Monitoring

Valencia, Spain, known as “La Ciudad del Turia,” is intrinsically linked to its waterways, including the Turia River. For over a century, the Empresa Mixta Valenciana De Aguas, S.A. (EMIVASA)—a public-private partnership formed by the Valencia City Council and Global Omnium—has provided high quality drinking water for the city of Valencia.

THE CHALLENGE

To further enhance water quality, EMIVASA and companies within Global Omnium, such as EMIMET have collaborated with Badger Meter to implement a real-time water quality monitoring system across their distribution network and at two drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs): La Presa and El Realón.

THE SOLUTION

In total, EMIVASA has installed around 50 water quality monitoring stations from Badger Meter in the city of Valencia, including pipe::scan, micro::station, nano:station and a combined solution using MetriNet and M-Node smart sensors under the name of akwaMetric (supplied by Mejoras Energéticas, a Badger Meter channel partner in Spain) devices throughout its distribution network. Operators can measure water quality accurately—including in pressurised pipes—to track several parameters.

RESULTS

EMIVASA now uses these insights to evaluate treatment effectiveness and validate hydraulic models. Operators can monitor water quality at multiple points, track stability, and make timely decisions during events. In parallel, Mejoras Energéticas deployed 200 additional stations across other municipalities managed by Global Omnium. These units monitor water quality, pressure, and flow and can automatically flush water when chlorine or turbidity thresholds are reached. All of this is powered by BlueEdge, Badger Meter’s platform for real-time water system management.

Our joint efforts [with EMIVASA and Global Omnium] have provided valuable insights for optimising their asset operations and have allowed us to enhance our solutions based on the needs of end users.
