Enhancing Utility Operations through IT/OT Collaboration

2024 SWAN Americas Research Project

Project Overview

Scope
IT/OT Convergence
Teamwork
Seeking open-minded teamplayers
Format
Group of 5-8 people and ~ 4 hours/month
Deliverables
Informational method cards, case studies, and synthesis
Deadline
Phase 1 to be completed by May 2024
Presentation
To be featured at SWAN 14th Annual Conference

IT/OT Convergence Problem Statement:

Utilities are trying to utilize their data to make better decisions regarding operations. However, they cannot access their control system data, and providing access can cause a security issue. This leaves utilities with the tradeoff of maintaining secure systems or leveraging their data to make data driven, smart decisions. By unifying operations and information technology, utilities can securely unlock their data to enhance operational insights, asset management, and decision making.

3 Project Phases:

  • Phase 1: Define standardized terminology and develop informational method cards to be shared at the SWAN Annual Conference in May
  • Phase 2: Collect utility-centric case studies
  • Phase 3: Synthesize themes and lessons learned from adjacent industries

Project Leads

  • Billy Raseman, Americas Research Co-Lead; Digital Strategies & Solutions (Hazen and Sawyer)
  • Jennifer Suttles, Americas Research Co-Lead; Principal Management Consultant / Associate Vice President (Carollo Engineers)
  • Klint Fletcher, Interim Americas Research Co-Lead; Senior Associate & Digital Infrastructure Lead (Hazen and Sawyer)
