Playbook Overview
Undertaking a smart metering project can be a costly and challenging initiative for utilities of all sizes. Launched mid-December 2024 in a collaborative effort between The Water Research Foundation and SWAN’s Smart Metering Community of Practice, this project aims to exchange and document practical smart metering information and experiences among global water utilities, metering and technology providers, regulators, and other water sector practitioners in the form of a guiding playbook. This will help key stakeholders navigate the smart metering journey through a lens of varying drivers, benefits, barriers and considerations to help inform projects, from initiation to implementation.

- Global Smart Metering Trends: Survey data insights from 55 utilities across 22 countries on topics like smart metering drivers, project risks, and communication protocol considerations.
- Smart Metering Case Studies: 12 global case studies for those seeking practical smart metering implementation examples and insights.
- Smart Metering Playbook: The final report includes examples of implementations of smart metering along different maturity levels, identifies opportunities and barriers for implementation, and provides key insights regarding metrology and communications.
